The 5 Stages of AI Acceptance (a developer’s guide to the Kübler-Ross model, 2026 edition)
1. Denial 🙅 “It’s just another hype cycle. ChatGPT can’t do anything useful. Our codebase is way too complex for AI.”
2. Anger 😤 “It’s hallucinating again! I spent an hour fixing what it ‘generated.’ Should’ve just written it myself.”
3. Bargaining 🤝 “Okay, maybe for simple tasks. But only for boilerplate. And only with my review on every single line.”
4. Depression 😔 “It writes faster than me. What do I do with my 10 years of experience? Am I even needed anymore?”
5. Acceptance 🧘 “AI is my tool. I set the direction, understand the context, make the decisions. It makes me faster — and that’s a good thing.”
Bonus stage for the truly advanced 🚀 “Hold on, let me set up an MCP server and teach it our code style…”
We’ve been through all of these. Some stages more than once. Where are you right now?
